Every Day Counts Summer Program

Truancy down 50%. Absenteeism down 58%. Because every day counts.

Since District Attorney Keith Blackwood took office and launched the Helping Families Initiative, our local families and students have made incredible strides. Truancy and absenteeism are down. School attendance and performance is up. The program’s focus is simple: Every day counts. That includes summer! We’re encouraging parents to keep the momentum going while school’s out.

Make this summer break a summer boost

Habits built now set the tone for the upcoming school year. The DA’s office, in partnership with community leaders and educators, is sharing ways to keep momentum high and help parents stay engaged—even while school is out.

Free or Low-Cost Summer Programs

There’s a wide range of options to keep summer engaging. Help your child make summer memories while building skills for success in the coming school year:

Smart Summer Tips—Because Every Day Counts

For the Parents:

  • Know where your child is—and who they’re hanging out with
  • Just as importantly, know where your child is online/in social media—and who they’re hanging out with there
  • Make your child aware that crime rises in the summer, including youth as both victim and offender
  • Don’t think in terms of expensive outings or trips. Positive summer memories are built on something free: quality time
  • Remember, quality time builds something else important: open communication. Face time allows kids to ask you for help in facing their problems.
  • When night falls, the dark web looms—take your kids’ phones at bedtime

For the Kids:

  • Be kind online—work it out before you put it out there. Anything you post could haunt you for life
  • If you don’t know them, don’t trust them. Only share with people you know—don’t accept friend requests from strangers
  • Don’t spend time worrying—tell an adult instead. If something feels weird or scary, you’re not alone. Talk to your safe adult
  • Get out there. Put the phone down and get outside: summer only happens in real life
